Humble Pie

Many of you who know me personally know that humbleness is not an attribute often applied to me.  That is not to say I am not humble but that it usually takes something BIG to remind me of my place.  After I graduated from college, at the tender and all-knowledgeable age of 22, I often did solo work and gave vocal recitals.  My degree was a Bachelor of Science in Music Performance and Education.  Of course, I was the best that ever happened to those who heard me  and mistakes were not part of my repertoire.  I thought!  However, as God always has and does with me He was about to show me that I was human and only He is perfect.  Case in point – I had been asked to sing Voi Che Sepete at a recital.  This is my signature piece and one that I often sing so imagine my surprise and embarrassment when I belched, quite loudly, right in the middle of the song.  Yep, Humble Pie, ala mode!  How about this one?  Shortly after we were married and moved to Bryan, OH I was asked to sing at the 1st Church of Christ.  Of course I jumped at the chance to sing in my new community.  I chose to sing The Lord’s Prayer because the accompanist was excellent and would showcase what I could do.  Yes, but…I simply forgot the words (that I’ve known since childhood) about half-way through and showcased what he could do.  Humble Pie, plus!

As my life progressed I began to look at humbleness a little differently.  It became more a reminder of Who is in charge and less’ all about me’.

I am humbled:

When my prayers are answered in ways I could not even imagine.

When Ray expresses his love for me after 39 years of marriage.

   That God chose me.

At having awesome Christian best friends.

By the spiritual gift of teaching and the opportunities I’ve had to use it.

At the mercies and miracles I’ve seen throughout my life.

With being allowed to worship (freely, daily, hourly) the One and Only God.

I could go on and on, but as I look at the blessings in my life I am humbled more and more by an Awesome God who is loving me through humbling me.

Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life.   Proverbs 22:4

Heavenly Father, Creator of ALL, Master Designer, You alone are worthy of my praise.  I am humbled by Your desire for the best for me.  Forgive me when I stumble, make me always humble in Your presence, for You are everywhere.  Oh, Lord, give me strength and courage to pursue Your plan for me with humbleness and joy.  Let this prayer come before the Throne with delightful fragrance in the precious Name of Jesus.     Make it so!

  1. We should take joy in our TAGS (talents, abilities, gifts, and skills)from God but never to abuse them or place them above His throne. It appears your heart is open to being pleasing to God and He will be there no matter our flaws. He is a loving God and we must remember our good comes from the Lord. We are nothing but fifthy rags compared to His Holiness. So let us walk in love and show love to others. But most importantly, we must love ourselves.

Keep walking with Christ and asking Him to change those things that are displeasing because we all have them.

I enjoyed your honesty and may we not be high-minded but humble like pie that everyone can eat of.

    • Thanks for your comments. I truly do not want to be recognized for anything more in this world than I love my LORD and have used whatever HE chooses to give me for HIS glory. I believe it necessary for others to see my weaknesses so they don’t feel alone in this very scary and lonely world, but feel a part of what is just part of life. I am so blessed by your comments. 2. Thanks for sharing about humility – I think it is a struggle for all of us in different ways. And it can be a lot to get our head around! I like the ways how you said you are humbled, it gave me something to think about 🙂

  3. Hi Marie I wish to make a correction about a Truth that many people have in error…God does not take His blessings away from us, we push them away.

God cannot do evil He is Love and He does not cause us to suffer or bring hardship on us to teach us something, He moulds us by the fruit of The Spirit not by pain and misfortune.

But He can bring good from evil and work everything for good in our lives when we Love Him.

    • Why is my comment waiting on moderation Marie, it is not my first comment? and WordPress said it is the person who owns the Blog who has this control so you may need to check your settings, as Christians we are to Trust each other in our replies, I’m sure you will agree so it must be an error.

But I did mean to leave you with the Scripture to confirm my last comment.

Lamentations 3: 33 For He doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.

    • Anne, I am so sorry that I didn’t get your reply moderated. I just saw it.
My computer is acting weird. Please know that I am honored at each comment and
      take them quite seriously.

I loved all the scripture you applied to my post. I do want you to know that I
don’t feel God was humbling me. I believe it is totally against His character to
act in any but a loving God. I do believe he disciplines me as I work to know
Him better. Most often the discipline is not in causing me any kind of harm but
in reminding me in a variety of ways that what I’ve said or done is not pleasing
in His sight. That’s when I’m on my knees asking forgiveness.

      Again, I apologize.

      Your Spirit Sister,
      Marie

    • Hi Marie thank you for explaining I did have a Hacker before but not sure anymore as I do notice it is in the weekends that I have problems posting and commenting and with my Blog, I will talk with WordPress Security again, during the week it could be someone on their weekend staff. I have web shots that show my comments are being moderated which they claim only Blog owners can do but WordPress do have access to our Dashboards and my settings are being changed all the time, I just changed them back this morning it is frustrating to have this happen all the time.

  4. I’ve been dealing with humility a lot lately. God has opened a door and has given me an amazing opportunity to go back to work. As I share my excitement with my friends I catch myself bragging and boasting about how awesome I am…God gave this opportunity to me and He can take it away just as quickly. It’s important to remember all good things come from Him – we just reflect His goodness to the world.
And you’re not alone, not too many years go I mixed up the verses of Away in a Manger during a Christmas pageant…very interesting lyrics that year!

  5. Hi Spirit Sisters thank you for sharing so honestly I remember as a teenager saying to my Boss I’m very intelergent and know everything I was later to learn the look he gave me meant Baby you will learn and I still am but thankfully God does not seek to embarass us we can do that all by ourselves. It is True as you said we are not to have fleshy or wordly pride but we are to have Pride in who we are in Christ Jesus as we can see in these Scriptures below…

    What Worldly Pride is…

Mark 7:22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, Pride, foolishness:

1 John 2:15- 17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the Love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the Pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

    What Godly Pride is …

Galatians 6: 4 Each one should understand their own actions. Then they can take Pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to others.

2 Corinthians 8:24 show these men the proof of your Love and the reason for our Pride in you, so that the Churches can see it.

2 Corinthians 5:11-12 Because we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. It is plain to God what we are, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience. We are giving you an opportunity to take Pride in us not trying to commend ourselves again to you , so that you have an answer for those who take Pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart.

Romans 11:13b I take Pride in my Ministry.

As a Christian I also take Godly Pride in my Ministry to those who are in darkness, and rejoice with those who are not as I’m sure you do. It would be wonderful to hear how God has worked miraculously in your life, He is so Awesome and so is His mighty workings in and through our lives and we glorify Him not ourselves when we share them.

    Christian Love Anne.
