Beneath The Bending Skies Book Review

Life, from childhood on, is a series of ups and downs, new experiences, old struggles, good and bad memories. ‘What a ride’ as some would say.

That’s what this new book, Beneath The Bending Skies by Jane Kirkpatrick, is all about. It’s the story of Mollie who wanted the respect and support of a wandering, controlling father, who was unable to give it. After her mother dies she is left with people she doesn’t know, then later on with relatives. When things are not going well she is moved to different states. At 14 she opens a school to help with family finances. She is engaged at 16. When her father returns and finds out he breaks it off and moves her far away again. Not all is lost, though, there is more, much more, to Mollie’s life.

As with many (or all) of her books Jane Kirkpatrick bases the story line and her characters on historical events, real people and places. This story comes to life while reading of lives of those who lived during the Gold Rush, the Women’s Suffrage Movement, and the Indian Wars during the Westward Expansion.

I highly recommend this book and hope you will take the time to read this delightful story.

Sunday Psalms 4

Psalm 4

Righteous GOD, answer my prayer. You have made me right in Your eyes. You have calmed my fears. Forgive me and hear my prayer.

Why do so many hate me? Why do they continue to listen to the lies and dishonesty of the know-it-alls?

GOD knows His children! GOD hears when we call!

Do not sin because you are angry. Think it through, pray about it, and don’t say what you are thinking. Ask for forgiveness and simply trust Him to do what needs to be done.

Selah! (Amen and yes!)

Thank You for the joy You have given in all You have provided. Shine Your goodness on us!

I will sleep in peace, knowing that You are protecting me.

What We Think Is Not Always Trustworthy

A friend sent a message a few days ago and asked if I could give her some verses to help with her thoughts about herself. I gave this a couple of days of reflection and sent these words back to her:

One of the verses I often go to when my mind gives me all kinds of negative thoughts about who I am and what I am and what I’ve done is Proverbs 3:5 – Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. To me, that says put all of my trust in God. My own understanding is my thoughts of things that have happened or things that might happen. That is not what God wants. He wants me to consider His Word so that I will know what is really happening.

Sometimes I have to think through Philippians 4:8 over and over and over until my thoughts are focused once again on my God and not on the things running helter-skelter through my mind.

Abba, Father, help me (us) focus completely and totally on Your Word whenever our thoughts are troubling us. Remind us to put You in control of the things that are out of our control.

Sunday Psalms 3

Psalm 3

Father, God, answer my prayer. You have made me right in Your eyes. You have calmed my fears. Forgive me and hear my prayer.

Why do so many hate me? Will they ever stop listening to the lies and dishonesty of the know-it-alls?

God knows His children! He hears me when I call.

Think about why you’re so angry. Don’t always say what you are thinking. Do not sin!

Repent and trust God!

Shine down on me! Let me know Your goodness and joy.

In my sleep, You alone protect me. You give me peace!

Sunday Psalms

Psalm 2

Why do people (and nations) plot and lie against the LORD and His people?

God laughs at them. He gets angry with them and says, “Who do you think you are? The One I have chosen is King, seated on the Throne on My Holy Mountain.”

God has decreed, “You are my Son (Jesus), I am your Father! All I have is Yours. You will use an iron rod and dash them to smithereens. You will win the battle!”

And so, leaders and kings, be wise and be warned. Serve the LORD or His wrath will destroy you in a flash.

Blessed are all who take refuge in HIM!
