Casseroles and Cats

Chewy has decided he (and Ebony) like the spaces my office provides. They can be found resting in my comfy reading chair, bathing on my desk chair, sitting in the window, and demanding my attention when I’m trying to work. (Sandpaper kisses always work!)

I tried a super simple recipe for a gathering we were having with friends.  I thought, no one has said they will bring dessert so I better come up with something.  Usually, Ray doesn’t like me to experiment in the food area when we have guests.  He had to agree, this was worth it.  All it lacked was a scoop of ice cream.  You can use any kind of fresh or frozen fruit with this.

Blueberry Cookie Casserole Yummmmmmmmm!

4 cups blueberries, rinsed and tossed in 1/4 cup sugar.  Put this into your sprayed, slow cooker.  Open a package of Sugar Cookie Mix and sprinkle the whole thing on top of the fruit.  Slice 1 stick of butter and dot the top.  Put the lid on and cook for 2 1/2 hours on High.

Don’t change yourselves to be like the people of this world, but let God change you inside with a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to understand and accept what God wants for you. You will be able to know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect. Romans 12:2 ERV

As I pondered these words I realized I was doing just that, letting those around me affect my thoughts. I love my cats and there are many who don’t understand why. They give me great joy and happiness as I watch them play and live life exactly as a cat should. I also love to eat and although I currently watch my diet very carefully, eating only foods that have no sugar or wheat, I do not let that stop me from enjoying my food. (Yes, I know the above recipe doesn’t reflect that because it is from several years ago, but it’s still a good recipe.)

God does not want us to base our lives on what others think or what we think they think. He wants us to enjoy the life He’s given us.

Blessings and success to you and yours!

Every Day Matters

What are you doing today?

How do you spend your days? Is every moment busy with a to-do list that is stress-producing and overwhelming? Do you know we are being held accountable for every minute we’ve been given on this earth?

Be very careful, then, how you live–not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Ephesians 5:15-17

We have no idea what tomorrow will bring. Asking God to show us how to live each day filled with wisdom and not foolishness should be part of our prayers every day.

Abba, Father, grow us and show us the purpose You have for our lives. Help us live each moment with Your Word as our guide.

Number Our Days

How is it possible to number our days, to know how many days we have? Only God knows that answer but He does want us to use our days wisely. (See Psalm 139:13-16 MSG)

First, we must always keep in mind that God gave us our days and He wants us to use them wisely. Remember that verse we learned in VBS, Matthew 6:33? Seek first the Kingdom of God. We are to always put Him and His plan first. Like, reading His Word and praying first thing in the morning, putting the needs of others first, living the first and greatest commandment –

Then, comes the plan. God is a planner. Look at Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you. Plans to prosper you and not harm you plans to give you hope and a future. God has planned out every moment of our day every step of the way. And so should we. Keep in mind this is not a way to add more busywork to our lives it’s more about mindfully organizing our days around what is most important.

There is an acronym that fits well here. J O Y

Jesus first! Spend quality, scheduled time in His presence. Read His Word! Pray! Worship! Study!

Others next! Call the sister or brother that has a birthday, anniversary, or just because. Take time to talk to your neighbor. Have coffee with a friend.

You last! That does not mean we are to leave ourselves and our responsibilities out. Determine what you need to do to keep yourself healthy spiritually, physically, mentally, and socially. Include diet, exercise, sleep, learning, chores, and recreation. Unless we keep ourselves in good shape we can’t meet the needs we see around us.

Wisdom is learning, knowing, and applying God’s Word at the right time, in the right place, and with the right purpose. It makes sense that once we have ‘our days numbered’ wisdom will follow.

Blessings to you and yours!

Tornado

On June 26, 1973 I awoke from a short afternoon nap with a sense of foreboding and noticed some very dark skies.  Looking out the west windows I could tell we were in for a big storm.  There were writhing tails hanging from the clouds on the horizon and, as would be expected, I could hear thunder in the distance.

It was time to close the windows and prepare for the possibility of no electricity.  When one lives in the country, storms often cause power outages.  This storm had the potential of being a doozy.  Pounding, heavy rain began to batter the roof and water began to pour over the entry door.  I heard what sounded like a jet plane. The house began to shake.  My glass cat collection started sliding off the shelves and shattering on the floor.  I had a sudden sense of being lifted up.  Then nothing.

I must have passed out because I remember waking up and wondering what was going on. Where was I?  It seemed that nothing was where it should be. Finally, I began to make sense of my surroundings.  I needed to get out! I had to get out! Seeing the window that used to be above the kitchen sink I, somehow, found a way to get through the debris.  I pulled and pushed on the frame, cutting my hand in the process, to get it open enough to crawl out.

I didn’t even look back but ran across the street to the neighbor’s and began pounding on the door.   No one was answering.  I felt like the last person on earth.  Where were they?

I began running down the street and discovered a truck parked beside the small grocery store.  I knew they weren’t open but maybe they had left the keys in the ignition.  I got in to at least get out of the rain.  Lo and behold, the keys were there.  I had never driven a standard transmission vehicle of any kind up to that point but I had watched my dad many times.  I started it, put it in second gear, (I didn’t realize it should be in first. In fact, I’m not sure at that point I even cared about doing it right.) stepped on the gas and got out of there.

Upon reaching the truck owner’s house I tried to explain what had happened.  The house was upside-down, electricity was arcing and sparking from the exposed wires, gas might be leaking, and from that point they took over.  The fire department was called and an ambulance took me to the hospital.  I had one cut on my hand from pulling the window open and many, many bruises that would continue to appear over many weeks.

I would remember this day for the rest of my life.  Although PTSD plagued me for many years, I was able, with enough counseling and support from family and friends, to overcome and move on.

You might ask, where was God in all this?  Why would He let something like this happen?  First of all, without question, He was with me all through this.  He was holding me as the house was turned up-side-down. I remember feeling cottony softness all around me.  His presence was as physical as the sensation of falling.

God does not desert us in the hard times of life. Why would He let this happen? My response to this question is this, He created nature and all that is part of it, including tornados. He knew and still knows every event that will happen on earth.  Neither you nor I are exempt from the natural order of things.  It’s all part of His story playing out through us.  He does not forget us!

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

Blessings to you and yours!
