Wisdom for Life – Book Review

Are you like me? We buy a book of devotionals that looks like it is exactly what we need and four or five days in we give up and find something new to read because it wasn’t what we thought it was. I found Wisdom for Life by Gail Purath to be exactly what I needed and wanted.

If you want to gain a deeper understanding of the Psalms and Proverbs this collection of 100, 1-Minute readings, gives direction on how to use Biblical principles to direct daily life.

If you’re dealing with discouragement, depression, or discontent you will find how the psalmist dealt with these tough issues. Are you wanting a more joy-filled, positive outlook? You’ll find some answers here. Have you wondered how to praise our God more effectively? She gives some excellent suggestions on how to give thanks in the mundane activities of daily life.

I love her style! When an issue is important to understand how the Holy Words apply to our life she wastes no time in explaining the errors in our thinking. Many of these very short, daily writings spoke to me about the people and this crazy world around me. Each devotion ends with a short section that helps us dig into the subject more deeply and use it more effectively in our own life situations.

This book will be available for you to read on February 21, 2023. You can pre-purchase it here (Wisdom for Life). It is definitely worth your time!

Words of Grace – Book Review

This is certainly not just another devotional.  It’s better than that.  It’s full of thoughtful, inspiring articles that drew me closer to my God.  It led me to a deeper level of thought on what the Word is trying to say.

Best of all, I can pick it up or put it down at any point.  Meaning, it’s not dated so I didn’t feel pressured to read a certain part on a certain day.  I can open it anywhere and read something important about my walk with Jesus any time I want.

It is thoughtfully divided into three categories.  Who God is, how He works in our lives, and how we are to respond to Him.

Here are a few quotes that really spoke to me:

  • “In the realm of morality and money, family and friends, work and play, God has a will and a way for us to live.”  (pg. 13)
  • “What is the message of Good News? God’s favor is on all mankind.” (pg. 25)
  • “We must know, feel, and acknowledge our sin before we will turn to Christ for salvation.  We must turn to Christ for salvation before we will have freedom from our sin.” (pg. 51)
  • Regarding the truth of Romans 8:1 – “You don’t have to justify yourself to others.  Imagine relating to others without being defensive.  You are not condemned, and no one can condemn you before God, so when you interact with others you can focus on truth, love, and edification.” (pg. 87)

I had only one drawback as I read through.  Scott Patty is a deep thinker and with that came sentence structure that was sometimes difficult to read.  But then, that forced me to think more deeply on God’s Word.

I’m sure I’ll be keeping this devotional in my book basket for months/years to come.

What a blessing!

Marie

30 Days To A More Beautiful You Book Review

I love to read!  You all know that, I’m sure!  I’ve just had the privilege of reviewing a delightful 30 day devotional  – 30 Days To A More Beautiful You by Kylie Bisutti.  Kylie is a former Victoria’s Secret Runway Model who clearly listened to the ‘prompts’ of the Holy Spirit in her life and used her experiences as a model to write this set of 30 devotions directed at girls in this modern culture.

30 days

This ‘little’ book  is full of delightful gems that would be great for mother/daughter/mentor discussions.  Each day has a scripture, a short narrative, questions and a thought for the day.  Ms. Bisutti used her experiences both inside the modeling business and in her personal life to show all women that our bodies are sacred to God and He wants us to glorify Him with them.  She is not prudish in her suggestions but does say that some of her modeling career did not honor herself or God.  (Please don’t misread this…she does not have a history of nudity!)  It’s a real bargain at only 99 cents!

A complementary copy of this book was provided by Tyndale House Publishers for the sole purpose of review.  I have included a link to purchase the book for you (Just click on the book cover.) but I receive no compensation for your purchase.
