Ahoti – Book Review

I have been given the honor and privilege of reviewing another really good, historically accurate book. You will find two completely different reviews on this page because Paraclete Publishing sent two books and I asked a friend to read and review with me.

Ahoti is a Hebrew word that means “my sister” and is a retelling of the well-known Bible Story about Tamar, King David’s daughter. However, the authors go much deeper into the story using information from the Book of Gad, the Bible, historical resources, and literary license to enhance and expand our understanding of what happened after she was raped by her brother.

As in real life, healing from a traumatic incident takes time, silence evidenced by the friends who will sit with you in the stillness, productive physical activity – music that helps express grief and a way to move on. In Tamar’s case, this came in the form of a garden.

Tamar disappeared into history after her brother Absalom was killed but, there is so much more to her story. King David’s Court was typical of political communities throughout history. There was the expected intrigue, murder, rumor mill, court affiliations and collaborations, alienations and separations that determined the fate of this woman.

One of the things I really enjoyed about this book was the vocabulary. The authors are very skilled at using words that are rarely used in fiction books. Words that are not so old or uncommon, giving the reader a better understanding of what was really happening in the time and place, were placed in just the right places.

I highly recommend this book. This story is the timeless history of good and bad. It is intense in spots, contemplative, and represents what life 3,000 years ago could have been like in king’s court.

The next review is by Tonya Heston. She is an avid reader of many genres and I’m proud to call her my God-daughter. Thanks, Tonya!

Ahoti is the beautiful story of a young girl whose innocence is stolen and what happens after her family sweeps it under the rug for the sake of family pride. As a 21st-century woman, this book saddened me, and then healed me in a way that only a book can.

Our God is a mending and healing God, and that is true no matter the harshness of what we have to go through to finally see it. I admire Tamar for her resiliency and her absolute faith that God still loved her, even if it felt like everyone had let her down. Everyone except for Mara, of course. Everyone needs a friend like Mara in their lives. I believe that Mara and Tamar were placed together for this divine purpose.

While this book isn’t my normal type of book, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It did get a bit wordy at times, but I don’t think it took anything away from the story. I did have to go back and refresh myself on what was said if Tamar had a lot of thoughts before responding to someone. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who’s interested in Biblical fiction and would like to imagine what happens after the writers of the Bible stopped recording.

Walking Wisely

This verse is David’s earnest plea for God’s guidance. He wants every step he takes to be led by God’s Word. He is asking God to shield him from any and all kinds of sin.

Like David, is it your greatest desire to be in total harmony with God’s Word? I hope so and I hope these 3 steps will help you on that journey.

Step 1: Reflect on your own path. Are you following the path He has planned for you?

Step 2: Surrender completely and trust totally that He knows what He’s doing. Invite Him, whose wisdom surpasses all understanding to guide you in all you think, say, and do. (Philippians 4:7)

Step 3: In this battle against temptation and sin, we need to take up David’s battle cry, “Let no sin rule over me!” The victory is ours!

Take a moment now to meditate and pray. Allow the wisdom of Psalm 119:133 to permeate your soul. Let it guide and strengthen your resolve to walk single-mindedly in God’s Word and ways.

Sunday Psalms 13

Psalm 13

LORD, have You forgotten me? Why are You hiding? I have no words. I am completely covered in sadness. My enemies seem to be winning.

LORD, hear me. Think of me. I can’t sleep. I need Your protection from the bullies around me.

I trust You! I know You love me! You have saved me. You have given me so much.

I will sing of Your love forever!

Casseroles and Cats

Chewy has decided he (and Ebony) like the spaces my office provides. They can be found resting in my comfy reading chair, bathing on my desk chair, sitting in the window, and demanding my attention when I’m trying to work. (Sandpaper kisses always work!)

I tried a super simple recipe for a gathering we were having with friends.  I thought, no one has said they will bring dessert so I better come up with something.  Usually, Ray doesn’t like me to experiment in the food area when we have guests.  He had to agree, this was worth it.  All it lacked was a scoop of ice cream.  You can use any kind of fresh or frozen fruit with this.

Blueberry Cookie Casserole Yummmmmmmmm!

4 cups blueberries, rinsed and tossed in 1/4 cup sugar.  Put this into your sprayed, slow cooker.  Open a package of Sugar Cookie Mix and sprinkle the whole thing on top of the fruit.  Slice 1 stick of butter and dot the top.  Put the lid on and cook for 2 1/2 hours on High.

Don’t change yourselves to be like the people of this world, but let God change you inside with a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to understand and accept what God wants for you. You will be able to know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect. Romans 12:2 ERV

As I pondered these words I realized I was doing just that, letting those around me affect my thoughts. I love my cats and there are many who don’t understand why. They give me great joy and happiness as I watch them play and live life exactly as a cat should. I also love to eat and although I currently watch my diet very carefully, eating only foods that have no sugar or wheat, I do not let that stop me from enjoying my food. (Yes, I know the above recipe doesn’t reflect that because it is from several years ago, but it’s still a good recipe.)

God does not want us to base our lives on what others think or what we think they think. He wants us to enjoy the life He’s given us.

Blessings and success to you and yours!

Sunday Psalms 3

Psalm 3

Father, God, answer my prayer. You have made me right in Your eyes. You have calmed my fears. Forgive me and hear my prayer.

Why do so many hate me? Will they ever stop listening to the lies and dishonesty of the know-it-alls?

God knows His children! He hears me when I call.

Think about why you’re so angry. Don’t always say what you are thinking. Do not sin!

Repent and trust God!

Shine down on me! Let me know Your goodness and joy.

In my sleep, You alone protect me. You give me peace!
